Joe and Denise Epler Present LOOKING BACK By Curt Synness Fifty years ago, Helena High’s cross country teams finished fourth in the boys division and sixth in the girls race at the 1971 State Cross Country Meet in Great Falls. Billings West captured the guys event with 70 points - led by champion Mike Doherty - just 1-point ahead of Missoula Hellgate and Billings Senior, at 71 apiece. Coach Bill Gilbert’s HHS boys were 4-points back at 74, spearheaded by sophomore Jim Stipcich, who placed eighth Cherie Mortensen with a clocking of 10:19 over the 2-mile course. Junior teammates Bill Headapohl and Kent Ferre’ finished 13th and 15th, followed by Craig Anderson in 19th and Kit Johnson at 20th. On the gals side, Kalispell won with a score of 46, paced by State runner-up Gigi Braunberger, who received several elbows to the ribs in the final 50 yards. Years later, Gigi Moy would serve as HHS’ girls coach. Helena’s Lady Bengals, under cocoaches Jude Gleason and Judy Nagengast, were led by Tracy Johnson, posting a time of 9:18 over 1 1/2-miles to place 12th. Rounding out the redand-white’s scorers were Carolyn Sperry in 14th, Cherie Mortensen at 23rd, Terri Hensleigh at 37th and Susan Boland in 43rd place. NEW LISTING!
