Fifty-two years ago, Helena High defeated Great
Falls Central 19-0 for their fifth victory in 1968,
the Bengals most successful
season in 10 years. Reaching the
end zone for HHS were receiver
Steve “Stooge” Harper on a 3-yard
scoring pass from quarterback
Dennis “Bobo” Nebel, set up by
Bob Berry’s 20-yard run; running
back Dan Lieberg on a 42-yard
Dave Marshall
off-tackle rushing touchdown, and
Keith Kovick’s 12-yard TD run. Pat McEwen booted
an extra-point kick. The Mustang’s lone scoring
threat was stymied by Pat Hurley’s interception
in the end zone. The Bengals ground out
247 yards rushing, while the defense held GFC to
just two first downs and 47 total offensive yards.
The starting defense for the red-and-white that
night were linemen Dave Marshall, Don “Butch”
Hoffman, Bruce Mihelish, Dave Pillatzke and
Ed Beniger; linebackers Jeff Salisbury, Jim Fleming
and Bruce Hedge; and “deep” backs Hurley,
Kapp Johnson and Nick Crawford.
