HELENA — Mount Helena Gymnastics will host 400 gymnasts from Montana and Wyoming at the 39th annual Mount Helena Open gymnastics meet this weekend.
The event will take place at two locations, with the boys meet taking place at the Helena Kidsports gym in Montana City, and the girls meet occurring at the Lewis & Clark Fairgrounds.
The girls competition kicks off at 3 p.m. Friday with Level 6, followed by the Level 7. Saturday's girls features the Level 2-3-4-5 throughout the day and finishes with the Xcel level at 5 p.m. The boys meet will start Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Meet director Denny Allen expects a great competition with the host team being solid at all levels.
“Our Level 3-4 girls as well as our boys are fresh off runner-up finishes in Billings last weekend, while the Level 8 girls captured third at the Disneyland Great Destinations Meet in California,” Allen said. “We’re coming into form on all events but if there’s one event we need to step up it’s the uneven bars.”
Allen noted “it’s hard to single out any individual that can’t step up and capture” an event or all-around championship, but listed a few to watch as Addison Thalheimer, Bella Yearry, Avery Popp, Abby Olson, Landrie Jones and Austin O’Shea.
The Helena Athletic Club’s Capital City Gymnastics teams will also be competing in the MHG Open.
