Helena's Heather Lieberg was running at a 6-minute mile pace at halfway point of the New York City Marathon on Sunday before she had to withdraw from the race due to cramps during the 18th mile. Her pace would have put her around a 2 hour, 30-plus minute finish.
"Calf cramp at Mile 18; When that happens there's nothing you can do," tweeted Lieberg, 37, who had texted before the race she was about 75-percent healthy. "On a brighter note, I can now do the U.S. Championships."
Lieberg was a 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials qaulifier and an eight-time Governors' Cup champion.
Another local runner, Kelli Butenko, 51, finished the NYC in 5:20:27.
