The Helena Bighorns opened their season with a two-game sweep.
This weekend, the team found itself on the other side of that broom.
Taking on the Great Falls Americans on Saturday, the Bighorns fell in the Electric City, 6-4, despite a third-period scoring surge. The loss came on the heels of a 2-0 defeat on Friday night.
On Saturday, the game’s hosts came out firing, and jumped out to a big 4-1 lead after just one period of play. That lead stretched to 6-1 after a pair of second-period goals, but Helena didn’t go quietly.
The Bighorns got a goal only 52 seconds into the third period from Ben Kottmeier – who had himself a night, despite the loss. He’d also scored the first-period goal for Helena, and finished out the scoring with a marker at 19:07 of the third to record a hat trick. The other third-period goal was scored by Gavin Cline, his first of the season.
Cody Brewer took the hard-luck loss for Helena. After Nick Battaglia was pulled ahead of the second period, Brewer stopped 28 of 30 shots. But the four that snuck past Battaglia in Great Falls’ 16-shot first created a hole too big to escape.
The Bighorns return to the Helena Ice Arena for a pair of games against the Yellowstone Quake on Friday and Saturday.
