HELENA -- The Helena Bighorns blew a 2-0 first period lead, but Gavin Cline scored late in overtime to lift the Bighorns past the Gillette Wild 4-3 Friday night at the Helena Ice Arena.
Shawn Mitchell and Jarett Scheibel scored in the first period to give the Bighorns the 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Hunter Pierce had the primary assist on both goals, and Ben Kottmeier also assisted on Scheibel's goal.
The Wild came out strong in the second period, with Brooks Mitzel scoring just two minutes into the frame to cut the Helena lead to 2-1. Mitzel scored again nine minutes later to tie the game at 2-all.
The tie would be short-lived however, as Hayden Seitz's short-handed goal just 24 seconds later put the Bighorns back in front 3-2. Scheibel assisted on Seitz's goal for his second point of the night.
Gillette's Gage Thompson scored 10 minutes into the third period to even the game at 3-all and send the contest into overtime.
In the extra session, Cline found the back of the net with 49 seconds remaining to give the Bighorns the win. Kaden Lindberg assisted on the game-winner.
The Bighorns peppered Wild goalie Cody Grogan with 56 shots, and he made 52 saves in the loss. Eric Berglund got the win in goal for Helena, stopping 41 of 44 Gillette shots. Berglund and the Bighorns defense came up big on the penalty kill, as Gillette went 0-4 on the power play and gave up a short-handed goal.
The teams play again Saturday night at the Helena Ice Arena. Puck drop is slated for 7:05 p.m.
