Managing just 19 total shots on goal, the Helena Bighorns fell to the Maine Wild 5-3 on Friday, the opening day of the NA3HL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota.
With just four shots on Wild keeper Brayden McGary in the opening 20 minutes, Helena found itself down a goal when Connor Busch scored on the power play at 14:53.
Maine added another goal 57 seconds into the second period, but then the Bighorns’ John Heddle scored his 14th of the season to get the Capital City crew on the board.
The Wild responded with a goal at 18:10, but Jarrett Scheibel scored again for the Bighorns just 30 seconds later.
That left the Wild leading by one, 3-2, heading into the third period. But Helena could never quite pull even.
Maine scored first in the frame to make it a two-goal cushion. Helena’s Ben Kottmeier scored with under five minutes to play, on the man advantage, but then Maine’s Dean Pratt bested Alex Kruger at 18:36, resulting in the final margin.
Helena will continue at the Showcase on Saturday, facing off against the Wooster Oilers at 3:45 p.m. local time.
