HELENA — Capital High will play host to Helena during the season’s first crosstown wrestling dual match on Friday.
The opening whistle for the bout is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the CHS Bear’s Den.
Capital is 1-9 in dual meets and placed ninth at the recent CMR Holiday Classic Tournament with six placers in the top-eight.
Helena is 1-8 in duals and finished 18th in the CMR tournament with three top-six placers.
The Bruins roster consists of six matmen with winning records, led by 205-pound junior Seth Jensen. Jensen owns a 13-3 mark with 10 pins, and recently placed fourth at the CMR Holiday.
Also above .500 are freshman Noah Kovick (13-2) at 132, Lee Lambrecht (15-3, eight pins) at 138, Travis Schulte (13-4) at 152/145, Cole Bradford (9-5) at 145/152, and heavyweight Justin Jenks (6-4). Schulte placed fifth at the CMR tourney.
“We just want to go out and compete hard every match,” CHS coach Jeff Mahana said.
Helena is led by three grapplers above .500, highlighted by last season's state champion Isaac Romero at 113. Romero finished runner-up at the CMR Classic, and stands at 13-1 with eight pins.
Devin Crawford owns a 14-1 mark and placed third at 138 in Great Falls. Romero and Crawford are juniors. Austin Murphy, at 120/126, is 10-5 (eight pins).
Helena has forfeited as many as five bouts (30 points) in a dual this season, and had four forfeits earlier this week against Bozeman.
“Our objective against Capital will be to wrestle as fundamentally sound as we can in order to maximize our scoring and pinning opportunities in the matches,” HHS coach John Burke said. “Our goal all year has been to make our next match our best match yet.”
