Jefferson High (14-5) placed runner-up at the District 5B volleyball tournament on Saturday, losing to Three Forks in the championship finals.

In the semifinals in Belgrade, Three Forks edged JHS in a marathon match in five sets, 23-25, 19-25, 27-25, 25-19, 15-17, vaulting the Tigers to the Cat Bird seat.

"That was a heartbreaking loss, we had match point in Game 3 and couldn't finish it," Jefferson coach Mike Majors said.

After the Panthers swept Manhattan 25-16, 25-18, 25-13 for the rematch with Three Forks in the chipper, Jefferson was bested in four by the Lady Wolves in the finale, 17-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-18.

Lady Panthers' stat leaders on the day included Emily McGinnis, Aubrey McMaster, Simonie Mendenhall, Emma Stout, Ellie Evertz and Abbie Rosenbaum.

"Three Forks was deserving champions, they have helped us get better," said Majors, whose spikers qualified for the Southern B tournament in Red Lodge on Thursday.

Townsend's volleyball team qualified for Saturday's play with a win over Big Timber, but ended its season in fourth place after losing to Manhattan.

Coach Natalie Horne's Lady Bulldogs were led by Taylor Noyes, Tavia Rooney, Jesse Barnett, Payton Vogl, Anna berg and Shay Dightman in the tournament.
