The Helena High and Capital swim teams got their seasons started in Butte on Friday, and only the Helena High girls were able to come away with a win in the three-way dual, beating Butte 117-94.
The Butte boys swept the Capital city teams, beating Helena High 113-45 and besting the Bruins 110-64. The Butte girls beat Capital in a close race, 105-100.
The hometown teams were able to take the team wins thanks to depth they lacked last year, which helped to cancel out some of the top performances by the visitors. In fact, of the 22 total events on Friday, a Helena or Capital swimmer touched the wall first in 13 of them.
The Capital girls won the 200-yard medley relay, while the Helena High boys took that same event. Jesse Ecklund (HHS) won the 200 free, while teammate Alex Ackerlund won the boys 200 freestyle. In the 200 IM, Capital's Avree Klungland took top honors, and Katie Summers won the 50 free and 100-yard backstroke.
Kate Murphy from Helena High bested the field in the 100 freestyle, while teammate Shawn Moore did the same in the boys head. The Helena girls took the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 free relay. Capital High's Carly Thomas won the 100 breaststroke, and Bruin Jacob Fleury won the boys 100 breaststroke.
