Three Helena High swimmers and one from Capital qualified for the finals of the State Swimming Meet after the preliminary rounds on Friday in Great Falls.
Those placing in the top six at Swarthout Fieldhouse Pool were Helena High’s Jesse Ecklund, Kate Murphy and Katie Summers; and Capital’s Avree Klungland.
Ecklund posted the top local placings, finishing second in the girls 500-yard freestyle in 5:24.55 and fourth in the 200 free in 2:02.34. The sophomore is the defending State AA champion in the longer race.
In the girls 100 backstroke, Murphy placed second, in 1:00.74, while teammate Summers finished fourth in 1:01.60.
Murphy was also fifth in 100 free in 55:01, followed by Klungland in sixth at 56:31.
Helena’s girls qualified for two relays finals, as well, taking fourth in both 200 and 400 freestyle.
A couple of near-misses for the finals were Klungland in the 200 IM and Summers and the HHS boys’ Nick Angeli, in their 100 backstroke events. All three came in seventh.
Rounding out the local Top 10 prelim placers were Capital girls (eighth, 200 free relay), Jessica Adams (ninth, 50 free), Jacob Fluery (10th, 200 IM); and HHS boys Alex Ackerlund (eighth, 200 free), and 200 medley relay boys (ninth).
The State meet concludes Saturday.
