HELENA — With the recent resignation of Helena High football and track coach Tony Arntson, Helena School District activities director Jim Opitz commented on Arntson's 24-year tenure, and explained the hiring procedure for his replacement.
"Besides being a dedicated coach, the thing about Tony was that he was really good for the school in general," Opitz said of Arntson, who has been hired as an assistant with Carroll College. "He was always willing to pitch in and help out wherever Helena High needed him, whether it was in the gym, or anywhere else in the building. Tony was and is just a very positive person and a great role model for the kids."
Opitz said they will be posting for the football position first — since Arntson is staying through this spring track season — probably by next week, and then there will be a 2-3 week waiting period for the applications to clear and to "figure things out."
"I'm guessing we should have a new hire by early to mid-March," he said. "The procedure has always been, that the administration makes our recommendation to the school board once the process is completed, and then the hire is pending on board approval."
