Helena High's Caiden Crawford and Nick Kunz of Capital both finished as runner-up at the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic on Saturday in Missoula.
Helena finished eighth in the 32-team tourney, scoring 120.5 points, while Capital placed 16th at 75. Class A Havre garnered the team championship, amassing 193 points.
Crawford advanced to the 182-pound title bout with a 6-4 decision over Levi Meinzinger (Spokane's University High) in the semifinals, before losing to two-time Class A champion Jace Stokes (Havre) in the chipper, 8-0. At 120, Kunz beat Caleb Birdwell (Lewistown), a state runner-up, 4-0 in the semis, and then was shaded by defending AA titlist Trae Vasquez (Flathead) 8-5 in the finals.
Crawford, a senior, now stands at 23-3 on the year, with 14 pins. Kunz is a junior and owns a 24-5 mark.
The Bengals finished with five top-six placers, including two victors in the consolation finals to place third: freshman Devin Crawford (23-9) at 113, and 170-pounder Hayden Schrull (25-2) at 170. Rounding out Helena High's placers are Noah Manibuson (25-5) fourth at 152, and Nick Moreni (16-9) sixth at 145.
"I'm very pleased with everyone's effort this weekend; we continue to see improvement which is a good sign going forward," HHS coach John Burke said.
There were four Bruins finishing in the top eight, with David Petersen (20-7) taking sixth at 205, heavyweight Sheldon Fladland (21-12) earning seventh, and Kory Broussard (18-10) coming in eighth.
"I'm really proud of the kids for competing in a really tough tournament," Capital coach Jeff Mahana said. "They're working to get ready for state and learning from every match."
Capital girls fall in Great Falls
Capital's High's girls fell behind early on the road Saturday, trailing Great Falls by 10 after the first quarter, and couldn't dig themselves out of the hole on the way to a 63-41, non-conference basketball loss.
The defeat drops Capital to 4-5 on the year.
Gabby Fought led the Lady Bison with 12 points, followed by Nora Klick and Moly Schmitz, at 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Capital was paced by sophomore post Taylor Sullivan, who canned 11 points, while teammates Tjaden Pallister and Aubry McMaster chipped in with seven counters each.
Jefferson boys breeze past Townsend
After a low-scoring first quarter, the Jefferson boys kept the defensive pressure on while finding its own offense, blowout out Elkhorn rival Townsend 42-16 on Saturday.
The teams scored a combined 11 points in the first quarter, but Townsend only scored 12 through the final three frames as Jefferson steadily pulled away.
AJ Eckmann led the balanced attack, scoring a game-high 15, including a 6-of-8 performance at the free-throw line.
Townsend, meanwhile, was paced by Jace Lewis and Easton Hatfield, who each scored four.
Townsend girls thump Jefferson
A stifling defense and a strong showing from Abby Leachman and Lainee Hill led the Townsend girls to a 45-22 win over rival Jefferson in 5B basketball action on Saturday.
Leachman scored 12 while Hill added 11 in the winning effort, which saw eight players get their names into the scoring column. The defense, too, was stout, limiting Jefferson to just four first-quarter points on the way to a commanding 26-9 lead at the half.
Jefferson was led by Madison Powers, Latrice Vossler and Hannah Grimsrud, who each scored five.
Murphy, Klungland take wins at Memorial
The Helena High girls took fourth at the Stacy Frey Memorial in Great Falls on Saturday, led by strong outings from Kate Murphy and Katie Summers. The Capital girls tied with Billings Central for fifth, while the HHS boys took eighth, one spot up on the Capital boys in ninth.
Capital City swimmers picked up several top-three finishes, including a pair of wins. One of those wins was by Murphy, who barely edged out Summers at the wall in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 1:01.76. Summers touched in 1:01.94. Murphy also took second in the 100 freestyle, while Summers was second in the 100 butterfly.
Capital's Avree Klungland also earned a win on Saturday, finishing the 200 IM in 2:24.01. Teammate Cassie Williams was second in the 50 freestyle, while Helena High's girls relay teams took second in the 200 free and third in the 200 medley.
Bulldogs finish eighth in Choteau
Townsend placed eighth in the 30-team Choteau Invitational Wrestling Tournament.
Jack Dolan captured the 120-pound championship, while Bulldog teammates Cameron Rauser (at 113) and Cole Bergstad (145), finished third and sixth, respectively.
