The weekend’s athletic schedule got a little shorter on Friday.

A day after the Helena School District announced the cancellation of all sporting events through Saturday, Jefferson High has done the same, and has also called off practice through the weekend.

With a heavy layer of snow blanketing much of the state and temperatures continuing to drop, the Panthers will not compete in events scheduled for Friday or Saturday. The school had already elected to cancel a Thursday trip to Great Falls for the wrestling team.

Tonight, Jefferson’s basketball teams were to travel to Manhattan. On Saturday, the teams were to host Whitehall and the wrestling team was to be in Deer Lodge.

Elkhorn rival Townsend will also now be off tonight. The Bulldogs basketball teams were to travel to Big Timber. Those games have been postponed. The girls junior high basketball game and speech and debate competition have been canceled.

The Townsend wrestling team, though, braved the elements and made the trip to Great Falls for the annual CMR Holiday Classic.

Not canceled, though, are the games scheduled for Saturday -- though they will now be at an earlier time. Choteau will still make the trip to Townsend, but the girls JV game will start at noon. Varsity games are scheduled to now begin around 3 p.m.
