HELENA -- University of Washington junior pole vaulter Chase Smith set a career PR of 18-feet-1 recently while winning the UW Indoor Open Track & Field meet in Dempsey Arena, in Seattle. Smith, who set Montana's all-class record with Helena High in 2015, actually posted two PRs during the meet, clearing 17-11 1/4 prior to his final clearance.
Smith is the reigning MPSF champion, and "likely secured his second trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships," according to the gohuskies.com website.
He cleared 17-11 1/4 on his second attempt, and then soared 18-1 on his first try, before three misses at 18-4. Smith's vault is the third-best in UW school history, and is currently tied for No. 8 in the nation.
