HELENA -- Helena High's Jacob Rice and Jack Dolan of Townsend have signed to run cross country for UM Western, Bulldogs harrier coach Dylan Zitzer told umwbulldogs.com.
Rice was selected to the Independent Record's 2017 All-Area Cross Country team. The Bengal senior placed 36th at the Mountain West Classic last fall, and ninth at the Butte Invitational with a time of 16 minutes, 44 seconds. Rice set a PR for the Bill Roberts course of 17:01 at the 7 of 7 meet, prior to placing 22nd at the State cross country meet. His best time in the 1,600 meters on Bill Roberts track is 4:48.
"After my assistant coach Jesse Zentz told me about Western's head coach, I visited the Western campus and talked with coach Zitzer, and both were very inviting," Rice related. "And several athletes on the team told me I should join them. I'm very excited about the block schedule program that UMW offers."
The son of Mike and Ali Rice, Jacob is undecided on a major.
Dolan, a two-time all-stater, was selected the IR's 2017 Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. In 2016, he placed ninth at state with the Bulldogs' Class B State championship team, and last fall he finished third in 17:27 while leading Townsend to the third-place trophy.
He has clocked a 4:38 time in the 1,600.
"When I went to Western's campus and met the coach and some of my future teammates, I just kinda knew right after that Dillon is the place for me," recounted Dolan, who was also recruited by MSU-Billings. "The block scheduling was a huge part of, and it's a smaller campus, which I really liked."
The versatile Dolan, who was an all-state wrestler for the 'Dawgs as junior, will graduate with 10 varsity letters in four sports -- four in cross country, three in wrestling, two in track and one in basketball.
He is the son of Sean and Brooke Dolan, and plans to major in education at UMW.
