The Carroll College Saints were picked in a tie to finish third in the Frontier Conference coaches football poll released on Tuesday. Carroll tied Southern Oregon with 33 points, though Southern Oregon did receive three first place votes.
The Frontier Conference did not allow coaches to vote for their own team.
Carroll is coming off consecutive 4-6 seasons and it’s the same slot the Saints were picked to finish in last year’s preseason poll. Carroll returns eight offensive starters, including first team all-conference receiver Connor Fohn and offensive lineman Chris Emter; seven defensive starters, including first team all-conference selections Beaugh Meyer (tackle) and punter Dylan Torgerson; and second team all-conference linebacker David Anderson.
Reigning league champ Montana Tech grabbed five first-place votes and the nod as the preseason favorite to win the league. Tech is coming off consecutive Frontier Conference titles, including its 10-2 campaign a season ago. The Orediggers return seven starters on offense and five on defense, and two special teamers.
The Saints open the season with a night game at Montana Tech on Aug. 31. Carroll defeated Tech in the teams’ opener last season at Nelson Stadium.
Up next for the Saints, freshman report to campus on Tuesday and then Wednesday the older players report. After that, two-a-day practices begin.
