BUTTE — Down two sets against rival Carroll College, the Montana Tech Orediggers dug deep in the Mining City on Saturday night to top the Saints.
In the end, not only did Tech triumph 3-2 (19-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-18, 15-11), but the ’Diggers turned the tables completely around, and appeared to be the more composed and experienced team.
“We did not pass very well at all,” Carroll coach Moe Boyle said. “When you can't pass serve very well, you can't run an offense very well, and that was simply the case tonight.”
This was a match where one good team had to lose, and for the first time in years, it wasn’t Tech’s turn to do so.
“We now just go back to practice on Monday,” Tech head coach Brian Solomon said. “Really though, it’s a big weekend for the program to beat two good teams. I am really impressed with the commitment our seniors have shown and how they have played. I am really happy with how the whole team has played.”
Friday, Tech (13-8, 3-6) defeated Great Falls for the weekend sweep of Frontier matches.
Carroll slips to 16-7 overall and 6-3 in Frontier Conference play.
Tech was led by Shersteen Cline’s 19 kills, while Mikayla Sullivan added 14 and Korey Krumm had 12. Sullivan hit .452 to lead all hitters on the night.
Alison Lunde had 48 assists, while Sullivan and Krumm each had five solo blocks. Defensively, Kimmy Kavran had 41 digs.
Carroll’s offense was led by the 16 kills by Elli Graff, while Calli Prestwood and Kathleen Mulligan each added eight.
“Our girls played real hard, especially after the win last night,” said Boyle, whose team defeated Lewis-Clark State in five sets late Friday. “We gave ourselves a chance, even without passing well at all, but we couldn't get our offense going.
“We were coming off a five-set win and an eight-hour bus drive. It's not an excuse but it does take its toll.”
