PHOENIX — The Montana softball team had its season debut spoiled by host Grand Canyon Thursday, dropping a pair of decisions in a doubleheader at Grand Canyon University Softball Stadium.
Grand Canyon won the first game 6-2, and the nightcap 5-2.
The Lopes (1-0) jumped on Grizzly starting pitcher Michaela Hood (0-1) for four runs in the third inning of the first game. Hood lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing a total of six runs on 10 hits with no strikeouts.
Grand Canyon's one-out rally in the third started with Shea Smith hitting a single to right and Loriann Olson belting a double to left center to give the hosts runners on second and third. Niki Gonzalez then delivered a double to score the first two runs.
The Lopes added two more runs with two outs. Laynee Gomez and Kendsey Hill each hit RBI singles.
Montana answered with a run in the fourth. Ashlyn Lyons hit an RBI single.
After Grand Canyon boosted its lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Montana responded with a run in the sixth. Delene Colburn belted an RBI double. Unfortunately for Montana, it failed to score again.
Colleen Driscoll pitched well in relief for the Grizzlies. She allowed two hits and no runs in 2 and 2/3 innings of work.
In the nightcap, Montana led 1-0 on an RBI single by Alex Wardlow and still clung to a 2-1 lead after an RBI double by Madison Saacke in the fifth.
But Grand Canyon belted a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win.
