Boulder's Brianna Layng was crowned as a state champion at the Elks Hoop Shoot in Livingston on Saturday.
The state competition crowned three boys and three girls as age-division champions. Layng won the girls 8-9 division, scoring a total of 21 of 25 shots. She hit nine of 10 in the first round, which helped her fend off Trout Creek's Gabrielle Hannum, who finished with a total of 20 to take second.
Layng also was crowned as the Best of the Best, awarded to the boy and girl with the best score regardless of age.
Also placing was Helena's Taylor Sayers, picking up 14 shots in the girls 10-11 division. That left her in a tie for third, but she won the tiebreaker by hitting four of five shots.
Helena's Brandy Carlson, too, finished in third in the girls 12-13 division. She hit 17 shots.
All competitors at the state competition advanced by winning a lodge title, followed by a win in their respective district championships.
Layng and the five other state champions will now represent Montana in the regional semifinals in Rapid City, South Dakota, in March. There they will compete against state champs from North Dakota and South Dakota with the winners moving on to the national finals in Chicago.
