BILLINGS -- Billings Mustangs starting pitcher Jhon De Jesus gave up a single, then hit Helena Brewers' Dallas Carroll with a pitch to open the series finale between the top two teams in the Pioneer League's North Division.
Helena center fielder Zach Clark recorded two RBIs a few batters later, but that was all the Brewers would muster off De Jesus as the Mustangs cruised to a 10-3 win on Wednesday night at Dehler Park.
"They were really hitting my curve ball, so I started throwing my fast ball a lot more and it was dominant," De Jesus said through a translator.
De Jesus, 20, is from Villa Altagracia, Dominican Republic.
The 6-foot-4, right-hander appreciates the "cooler" weather Billings offers, and enjoyed the celebrations surrounding the 4th of July on Tuesday.
De Jesus had played his two previous seasons for the Reds' affiliate in the Dominican Summer League. This season is his first with the Mustangs.
"There is a lot of baseball (in the Dominican Republic)," he said. "There are lots of beaches and a lot of tourist spots, and that is basically how the country makes their money."
De Jesus also said there is a slight difference in the game between the Pioneer League and the Dominican Summer League.
"The strike zone is a lot bigger in the Dominican, and it is much smaller (in the Pioneer League)," he said.
De Jesus finished the game with five strikeouts over five innings pitched and only allowed three hits in his outing. He earned the win and improved to 1-1 on the season.
The Mustangs took advantage of costly errors by Brewers shortstop Antonio Pinero.
Pinero had five errors which led to Billings plating three runs in the first and two additional runs in the fourth.
On two separate plays, Pinero bobbled a ground ball and had an errant throw to the second basemen, Franly Mallen, while attempting to rush a double play.
Mustangs catcher Morgan Lofstrom singled to drive in two runs after Pinero's first error, and Andy Sugilio doubled in another two runs following a double-error by Pinero in the fourth.
The Mustangs will hit the road for a two-game series in Helena, set for Thursday and Friday at Kindrick Legion Field.
