Let me see if I have this straight in my mind. The sheriff's office will absorb the coroner's duties, making more work for deputies who are already spread thin in our large county. The potential cost of this merger is $265,000 annually. I'm not sure what Mr. Backeberg's annual salary is but I doubt that it comes close to $265,000. Commissioner Hunthausen stated "we have no control over the day to day operation of the sheriff's office." Commissioner Geise said that merging the coroner's position with the much more scrutinized sheriff's office would provide more transparency for the public. I'm sorry, but I just don't get it.
