I grew up walking by the Confederate Memorial Fountain, and, whether or not its removal is something you support, the empty spot in Hill Park remains. Helena -- and Montana more broadly -- has a deep and talented pool of artists to draw upon for inspiration, including gifted sculptors like Lyle Schwabauer and Mari Bolen. The best lessons we can teach the young people watching us as we grapple with this moment are that beauty can come from pain and division does not have to persist. Let's create something for Hill Park that represents us as we are now, something that reminds us that neither history nor art is immutable or stagnant.
