Thumbs down

Though we understand why it needs to happen, the Helena Brewers’ move to Colorado Springs in 2019 is going to hurt.

Many of us have fond memories of spending hot summer nights with a cold drink in hand watching the Brewers play at Kindrick Legion Field. With individual tickets available for only about $10 a pop, the club has given Helena affordable family entertainment for well over a decade.

Now, as the Brewers prepare to move to a bigger city with more opportunities, we can’t help but question whether we as a community could have done more to keep them here.

The Brewers have drawn the lowest attendance in the Pioneer League for at least 12 years. While Helena’s smaller population undoubtedly had something to do with that, local fans could have filled the stands at every game if they wanted to.

In any case, we are grateful that the Brewers are giving Helena two more seasons. And we wish them the best of luck in their new home.

Our loss will certainly be Colorado's gain.

Thumbs up

District Judge Michael McMahon deserves a big thumbs up for his swift action on a lawsuit threatening the demolition of Central School and construction of a new building in its place.

A lawsuit filed in March sought to halt the project, arguing that the city of Helena didn’t follow the requirements of its Historic Preservation Ordinance or Growth Policy in issuing a demolition permit for the historic school. Less than three months later, McMahon ruled that it doesn’t matter whether the city followed the regulations or not in this case because the school district has “exclusive and sole authority” over the property.

Of course, we will be sad to see the old Central School go. But the school district and the voters have decided it’s time to move on, and dragging out the suit over the coming months or years would have only hurt the plaintiffs, the school district, the students waiting for a school and the Helena community at large.

Thank you, Judge McMahon, for clearing up this issue post haste.

For the first time in a long time, the future of Central School is no longer in limbo.
