Though it was not as financially or critically successful as studio executives had hoped, 1979's "1941," directed by Steven Spielberg, has become a cult classic. The film depicts the post-Pearl Harbor panic that occurred in Los Angeles in December, 1941, although it is based primarily on the February, 1942 air raid panic that became known as the Battle of Los Angeles. The film was written by "Back to the Future" scribes Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, and starred John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd and Ned Beatty. Among several Christmas-themed scenes in the movie is one in which Japanese soldiers disguise themselves as Christmas trees as they attempt to invade Hollywood.
