Referring to the school consolidation article, I strongly believe that the neighborhood schools should not close. I was worried last year when the city thought about closing down the park next to our house. Luckily that did not happen but now school administrators are trying to take away my school.
My brother and I will be in middle school by the time Hawthorne closes but our neighbors have children who are 8 and 6. Maybe families like our neighbors will move away or other people with children will not want to move to our neighborhood without a school there. I don’t want that.
Another reason is that bigger is not better. Some kids need one-on-one attention, and I am concerned they will not get the attention they need in a class of 30 kids.
Hawthorne is a neighborhood school. It is right across the street from my house. I truly enjoy walking to school, a feature that neighborhood schools provide. They also provide neighborhood festivities such a family math night, school carnivals and holiday parties.
So in my opinion, they should not close neighborhood schools like Hawthorne.
