School board praised for work on curriculum

2010-09-29T00:00:00Z School board praised for work on curriculumRyan Morton, Letter to the editor Helena Independent Record
September 29, 2010 12:00 am  •

Thanks to the Helena School Board so very much for all its efforts in proposing the most comprehensive health curriculum I have ever seen or heard of. The waves of negative comments may still be ringing in their ears, so I wanted to write with my enthusiastic support for everything they’ve done.

On the other hand, a vocal opposition has been far more offensive than the goals of the revised curriculum. One opponent went as far as calling a good friend of mine a “pervert” for speaking in favor of teaching non-discrimination. In the latest public meeting, Trustee Trevor Wilkerson requested the word “sodomy” or “unnatural sex” be used to describe certain sex acts. This word is both offensive and archaic. The word is a direct attack on the self-concepts of LGBTIQ children. Wilkerson would have LGBTIQ children learn that their romantic desires and interests are unnatural. This type of opposition doesn’t deserve the board’s ear, deference or respect.

Please make appropriate revisions as appropriate, but do not budge from the primary goals of teaching children to be healthy, safer and prepared to live in and understand the world around them. Thanks so much for the board’s hard work and patience!

Ryan Morton

IJBird said: "And Ryan, playing the devils advocate here, if you went to the last meeting or watched it on television you would know Mr. Wilkerson was making a point on "medical terminology" and using that as an example. If the curriculum is insistant on teaching children the correct medical terminology then what you quoted as "unnatural sex" is in fact defined under any dictionary, medical and otherwise, as sodomy. The definition taken directly from Wikipedia is : "Sodomy (pronounced /ˈsɒdəmi/) is a term used in the law to describe the act of "unnatural"[1] sex, which depending on jurisdiction can consist of oral sex or anal sex or any non-genital to genital congress, whether heterosexual, or homosexual, or with human or animal." Mr. Wilkerson quoted it directly. (Sexual intercourse on the other hand is defined as :"In sexual intercourse, the male reproductive organ enters the female reproductive tract." That is a direct quote.) You stating "This word is both offensive and archaic. The word is a direct attack on the self-concepts of LGBTIQ children." and "This type of opposition doesn’t deserve the board’s ear, deference or respect." is in fact a false statement and a biased one and you are attacking him based on YOUR lifestyle choice and YOUR opinion. Mr. Wilkerson was pointing out the correct terminology and was stating it should then be correct on EVERYTHING taught to children. He was NOT biased nor judgemental when he stated the fact, he had every right to do so, and the board had every right to hear it. If YOU don't like the correct terminology and definition then I suggest YOU legally change it. Until then, based on wanting to teach children the correct medical terminology and definition stated in dictionaries, Wikipedia, medical books, etc.. then per this suggested curriculum, like it or not, it should be taught as such. "

I'm glad Wikipedia is being used to settle arguments here.

Gay sex is not unnatural sex. It's just sex. Describing it as sodomy is archaic and offensive as noted in the letter. Further, MCA uses the term sexual deviance, not sodomy, and that law was struck down in 1997. Wilkerson is misinformed, you're misinformed, and anyone who believes "sodomy" should be used to describe LGBTIQ sex is no friend to our children or community. Shame on you.

Support the school board's passage of the curriculum!

Gun, you think its ok to be gay. You know what that is fine with me. You have the right to think that and I am not trying to change your mind. There are many more people that don't think it is normal or ok or whatever it is that you think. Like I said I would say that I decided to be straight in about the sixth grade when I first decided to go on a date with a girl, no I have not tried it but nice attempt at a dig. Stop comparing being gay to being black. I know alot of people that are colored and they don't like the comparisons by people of your ilk pushing an agenda of acceptance. Apples to oranges gun. Your right about it not being any of my business what two grown adults do together. It is no ones business. So why do they want everybody to know and accept it?? It should be kept private just like everyone else. Again you are wrong about the 5 young people in the last week, it was 4 over a months time and while I agree it is sad, people commit suicide for many other different reasons other than gay bashing. Look, all forms of bullying are wrong and need to be addressed. Even the type of cyber bullying that you do on a daily basis. But the people that you are bashing are educated adults that hold your opinions with little regard. You want to talk about the term "non of your damn business"? Ok, it is non of your dam business how other people raise their children or the morals they instill and it is not up to you to change that. Your arrogance is offensive

ITS OK TO BE GAY ITS OK TO BE GAY ITS OK TO BE GAY
I don't know what all of this blathering on about science is going to do to help. Clearly scientific facts have no place in these peoples lives. They live and die by their fairy tale book aka the Bible. To the dolphins of the world, we do not care if you approve of the gay lifestyle, the fact of the matter is that 10% of the population is gay. If two consenting adults want to engage in a loving relationship and it just so happens to be of their same gender, ITS NONE OF YOUR DAMN BUSINESS. Society is becoming more and more accepting of homosexuals. But on that same note I would like to point out that 5 young people in the last week have taken their own lives due to bullying about their sexual orientation. This happens all the time BTW. It is an epidemic that must be addressed.
It is the exact same situation we as a society found ourselves in 40-50 years ago with black people. They were de-humanized for the color of their skin. It took a while and many black people suffered, were brutalized and murdered for the color of their skin. Now many homosexuals are brutalized and murdered (Mat Sheppard) for their sexual preferance. Dolphin believes it to be a choice, so when did you make the choice to be straight Dolphin? That must imply that you have tried the gay lifestyle tho in order to make a "choice" between the two. Your arguments are silly. Gay people are not harming anyone. So you go ahead and teach your kids that being gay is wrong or whatever, we as a society will just have to work that much harder to teach them that ITS OK TO BE GAY. Prop 8 was overturned, 5 states now allow gay people to get married...slowly but surely and in 50 yrs society will look back in awe just as we do about the civil rights movement. Can you believe that people were allowed at any point to keep other people as slaves?? What was wrong with those people??

Actually all of the neurological studies have been done on adults, therefor the correlation between homosexual difference in brain shape (i.e. more female or more male) and lifestyle choice vs. inherited or womb environment (from birth) cannot be made.

It is theorized that in the cases where a homosexual adult has a brain scan that is like the opposite sex, these people could have been exposed to abnormal levels of the opposite sex hormone in the womb. Unfortunately, no studies have been done from birth to adulthood since homosexuality cannot be identified in an infant.

I personally think the womb exposure is a very scientifically valid theory. However, it cannot be ruled out that choosing to be more like the opposite sex, particularly during the hormone driven age of adolescence, might be a driving factor in the neurological differences observed in homosexual adults. I think a lot more work needs to be done in order to validate the science, but in the meantime, one can't say all people who believe homosexuality is part of a choice are wrong.

Blueeyes; Look like I have said before, you can't convince the adults that being gay is normal so you are trying to convince the children. Keep your opinions out of our childrens minds, it is not your job to raise them. There is not hate or fear here so quit calling names. The same studies that you speak of that show a neurological difference in the brain of gays will show that some straight people have those same differences. Science admits that they are unable to find a gene that makes you homosexual. Till then you have no proof, for every study that you think show proof there are others that debunk it. Again, raise your own kids and stop thinking that it is ok for you or anyone else to intrude on other peoples children.

When are people going to listen to facts instead of hatefilled emotions. Homosexuality is not a "lifestyle" choice. It has been scientifically identified as a neurological difference in the brain. Not abnormal, not perverted, not something one can wish away, choose, it is just the way they are. Many young children know the difference at an early age and it it time to use intelligence and sensitivity to let them know they too are okay and not abnormal.

gun, did you even read the article? Wildwilly was quoting directly from it and NOT just pulling it out of nowhere. Furthermore, they didn't even refer to it being taught in the curriculum. I think you desperately need to stop attacking people because it is getting very old.
And Ryan, playing the devils advocate here, if you went to the last meeting or watched it on television you would know Mr. Wilkerson was making a point on "medical terminology" and using that as an example.
