Rep. Jenny Eck, D-Helena, saw the Reynolds Creek Fire in Glacier National Park up close Tuesday night.
The fire, which has grown rapidly to about 2,000 acres, caused the closure of the Going to the Sun Road and evacuation of the immediate area on Tuesday afternoon.
Eck was in Glacier as part of a group hosting a delegate of Australian lawmakers. According to a text she sent late last night, the group was on St. Mary's lake at 4 p.m. and had hoped to hike to the falls.
"Instead the fire blew up while we were on the lake ... We couldn't dock of course, but we did end up circling the lake for quite a while to make sure that the other boat was able to evacuate all the hikers," Eck texted.
