In the last six days alone, Helena has received the same amount of snowfall as it did during all of last winter.
Helena Regional Airport reported 14.8 inches of snow fell from Sunday through Friday afternoon, which is the exact same amount it reported during all of the winter 2015-16 season.
This week’s daily snow totals came out to 0.1 inches Sunday, 5.8 inches Monday, 2.7 inches Tuesday, 0 inches Wednesday, 6 inches Thursday, and 0.2 inches by Friday afternoon. Monday’s snowfall beat the prior record of 5.7 inches set in 1985, and Thursday’s snowfall beat the prior record of 5.6 inches set in 1979, said Jim Brusda, lead meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Great Falls.
The airport has reported a total 17.8 inches of snow so far this winter season, including 1 inch in October, 0.3 inches in November and 16.5 inches so far in December.
On average, Helena normally receives 38.1 inches of snow each winter, said National Weather Service meteorologist Keith Jaszka.
“At this point, the rest of the winter looks to be overall near normal in terms of temperature and precipitation,” he said. “So chances are, this winter season will be quite a bit snowier than last one.”
