A 24-year-old Helena man is jailed on multiple felony charges after an alleged theft reportedly led to an assault and property damage at a Helena store.

James Donovan Allen Jr. faces felony charges of robbery, criminal mischief and possession of stolen property, and a misdemeanor count of obstructing a peace officer.

Helena Police responded to Sportsman’s Warehouse last Friday to the report of a robbery. The suspect allegedly stole sunglasses from the store and assaulted two employees who confronted him, court documents state.

“After struggling with the employees, the defendant fled in a vehicle that had previously been stolen out of another jurisdiction,” according to a court affidavit, which goes on to allege that Allen intentionally struck two vehicles and drove over landscaping.

Property damage was estimated at $1,500, and the stolen vehicle was valued at $2,500.

Officers say they recognized Allen from the surveillance video. He was later located at a residence where officers allege “he refused to obey commands to come out of the residence, refused to take his hands out of his pockets, and pretended he took someone hostage,” leading to the obstructing charge.

Allen’s bond was set at $40,000.
