A horse died after falling through the floor of a moving trailer as it drove through East Helena on Highway 12 Monday morning.

The horse was euthanized by a veterinarian after falling through the floorboards.

A passing motorist called authorities around 8:42 a.m. about the trailer, which was pulled over just west of East Helena. East Valley Volunteer Fire Department, East Helena Police and the Montana Highway Patrol responded. One of the two westbound lanes was blocked.

MHP trooper Ben Havron said the incident occurred at a low speed and driver pulled over, stopping within a few hundred feet.

Crews used a front-end loader to lift the trailer off the horse for removal.

No other horses were in the trailer. The driver was not cited.

A woman who owned the horse would not give her name.

“This is a tragedy just like any other death,” she said.
