A Great Falls man died Sunday afternoon after he fell about 90 feet while ice climbing near Augusta.
Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton said the fall was reported at 1:12 p.m. at Cataract Falls, which is about 20 miles west of Augusta off Elk Creek Road. He said responders from the sheriff’s office and the Augusta Volunteer Ambulance Service arrived at 3:07 p.m., as access to the remote, off-road area was particularly difficult in the snow.
Dutton said the older man was dead when the responders arrived. The sheriff said authorities did not find anything suspicious, and the death appeared to be accidental.
With permission from the coroner, the man’s body was removed by the responders. A search and rescue crew and air ambulance were both canceled.
The man was a very avid climber and really liked the area, Dutton said.
