Do you have or have had kids in the school district? If so, which schools?
Why are you running for school board?
I was asked to run.
What makes you a good choice for this position?
I hate self-promotion and I rarely miss a meeting.
What are the three key issues you believe are facing the school district?
The bond for the elementary school, for one. Also, as this is the first year we will be able to ask the people in the district about a high school, I believe this is one of our greatest issues of the board. Lastly, it appears rapid growth in the district will continue and have to be addressed.
Do you support the East Helena Public School May 2 building bond? Why or why not?
Ten years ago, a long term infrastructure committee was formed to address population growth in the district and to plan for the future. We set bench marks based on available space at the time and have reached the future. It's not like we decided last year we need a school; the tickets were bought ten years ago, but the train is pulling into the station now. It would be nice if it was a couple years away, but the train is pulling into the station now.
What is the district doing well?
The school is always looking to increase the educational opportunities for the children, but it's through grants or other creative ways of establishing revolutionary learning techniques. We're not doing what everybody else is doing, we're doing whatever everybody else wants to be doing. And second of all, the school board is very aware of who pays the bills: Our property tax-payers, and we know we can't go anywhere without them. We covet your trust, and we don't want to disappoint you.
What could the district do better?
I think the school could do everything better, but we aren't tasked to do everything. What we're supposed to do, we do very well. With commitment and passion.
How will you come up to speed on school board issues?
If I'm not up to speed yet, I'll never catch up.
