A 48-year-old California man faces nine charges stemming from illegal hunting of deer in the Denton Creek area near Wolf Creek.

Joseph R. Bishop was arrested Saturday on four counts of hunting without a valid license, four counts of unlawful possession of a game animal and one count of hunting in the wrong district, according to documents filed in Justice Court on Monday.

Game wardens were tipped off that there was an untagged mule deer hanging in front of a Denton Creek cabin.

When a game warden went to the cabin, he allegedly found Bishop and another man in possession of a freshly killed untagged whitetail doe, according to court documents.

Bishop, of Shasta Lake, Calif., allegedly admitted to killing the doe and told the warden he was planning to tag the deer with a tag that was not valid for that district, the documents state.

He also said he had shot and killed the mule deer hanging in front of the cabin, according to the documents.

The game warden learned during the investigation that Bishop had killed other deer and used another man’s tags on them. No one else was cited in the incident.
