On Wednesday, Montana's sole representative in the U.S. House praised Ryan's announcement he would retire at the end of the term:
“Paul Ryan did not seek the speakership, but he stepped up to assume the role at a critical moment. A selfless public servant, Speaker Ryan has guided the House of Representatives to substantial conservative accomplishments, including the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act which is helping hardworking Montanans," Gianforte said. "Speaker Ryan is a principled conservative and a deeply committed family man. I am grateful for his service to our country and will miss his thoughtful leadership.”
