A 26-year-old man is facing multiple felony charges for allegedly trying to set fire to a Helena Valley resident and his house.

David Joseph Charles II, of Pennsylvania, is charged with assault with a weapon and attempted arson.

Charles was arrested Dec. 30 by Lewis and Clark County deputies after a 911 call about a man knocking on doors screaming for help and saying someone was trying to light him and his house on fire.

A deputy smelled lighter fluid on the alleged victim while searching him for weapons after responding to the scene, according to court documents. The man told deputies Charles had poured lighter fluid on him and attempted to light him on fire with a Zippo lighter, according to court documents.

The man said Charles had also poured lighter fluid around his house and tried to light it on fire. While searching the house, the deputy found an empty can of lighter fluid and burn marks on the carpet near the bedrooms, according to court documents.

Charles refused to speak to police without a lawyer present.
