A Helena man who admitted to putting his hand on his wife’s throat "for less than 1-2 seconds" has been charged with strangulation of a partner or family member, which is a felony.

After a deputy was dispatched to a home in the 3000 block of Wylie Drive Thursday afternoon, Thomas Robert McDermott, 45, walked outside with his hands in the air. McDermott told the deputy he put his hand on his wife's throat during an argument, and court documents say he was intoxicated at the time.

The altercation occurred in front of two children, ages 5 and 8, the documents say.
