A 57-year-old Helena man is accused of strangling his partner and threatening her with a hatchet on New Year's Day.
David Strachan is being charged with assault with a weapon, strangulation of a partner or family member and partner or family member assault.
Helena police officers were alerted to a verbal altercation on the 100 block of Rodney Street, where they encountered Strachan. Strachan said he was arguing with his partner and that he had told her to leave the residence, but he denied touching or hitting the person, according to court documents.
The partner said Strachan had thrown her to the ground and kicked her, according to court documents. She also said she lived in the residence with Strachan, according to court documents.
The partner said Strachan had strangled her until she could not breathe and also threatened to hit her with a hatchet if she did not leave the residence.
Strachan admitted to grabbing the hatchet and assuming a threatening posture, according to court documents.
