RAPID CITY, S.D. – It’s not every day someone comes across a mountain lion. It’s even rarer for someone to get within a foot of the predator and walk away without a scratch.

But that’s what Dan Casey has done. The Rapid City man, who keeps a trap in the woods west of town, managed to capture a mountain lion last week. Rather than call the forest rangers and national park service to help release the animal safely, he decided to simply open the trap to let the animal go, risking life and limb in the process. Even more, he did it with his wife Justin and his kids waiting a dozen paces away in the family’s pickup truck, Justin filming.

“They’re probably more interested in the crazy person in front of the cage, rather than the mountain lion,” Justin told the Billings Gazette, referring to the thousands of people who have watched the video on YouTube thus far. “I guess I just trust him and I thought, ‘OK, I guess he’s going to let it out, and that’s what’s going to happen today.”

No conclusion has been reached on whether Dan Casey is extremely brave or extremely crazy, but he’s certainly one of the two.
