Mildred (Millie) Belgard and Airman Thomas Sullivan were married April 12, 1953, at Tioga, Louisiana. Their first year together was spent in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, where Tom was stationed at Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod, until he was transferred to a mobile squadron in the Far East.

Millie was born and raised in Louisiana. She met Tom when he was stationed at the England Air Force Base in Alexandria, Louisiana.

She worked as a librarian in the Glendive Public Library while they lived there for 23 years after his service duty and until they moved to Helena. In Helena, she was librarian at the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation.

Tom is a native of the Bitterroot Valley of Montana, having been born in Hamilton in 1933. After his Air Force service in 1956, he was hired by Mountain Bell Telephone Co. to go to Glendive and help provide oil field communications. In 1977, he was transferred to Helena and retired from AT&T in 1987.

Their first child, Jeanette, who lives in Helena, was born in Louisiana while Tom was on Okinawa. They had four other children while living in Glendive. They are: Laura Frazier in Townsend; Thomas M. Sullivan of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Charlie Sullivan of Orland, California, and Patrick Sullivan of Richardson, Texas.

Their retirement, in addition to helping their aging parents, included research and writing their family history. "The Pignut Tree" is Millie's story of growing up in Louisiana  during the war years in an area surrounded by military bases.

The story of Tom's family history, "Journeys to the Bitterroot" relates how the different branches of his family came to the Bitterroot from Ireland and the mid-United States via the Oregon Trail.

After many winters of living on the desert with friends and family near Quartzsite, Arizona, Millie and Tom now live in Helena. They continue their support of the Democratic party, Indian education and environmental and human rights concerns.

A family gathering to celebrate their 65th anniversary will be held in May at their son's home in California.
