AKA: Save our schools!
At the Cinemark
Genre: Blackboard jungle.
Sub-genre: Unions hurt schools.
Target audience: Parents fed up with public education.
Plotting along: A parent whose child is getting a rotten elementary education campaigns to take back the school, remove the teachers union and save the kids.
Cast: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis,
Memorable lines: “I can tell you being poor sucks, and my kid can’t read!”
Brent’s grade: D. Even Gyllenhaal and Davis, fine actresses, can’t begin to save this quite naïve and even stupid portrait of why schools fail. Presumably the scriptwriters attended school, but there’s no evidence here that they did.
