A local business will acquire a Colorado company’s Helena radio stations if an agreement between the two entities goes as planned.
The two companies announced Wednesday that Helena-based Montana Radio Company will acquire two FM stations and one AM station serving Helena from Colorado-based Cherry Creek Media. In exchange, the Helena company is offering three FM translators serving Great Falls, an FM station serving Butte and an undisclosed amount of cash.
The local company also owns three radio stations in Idaho. But if the swap and the divestment of another Montana Radio Company radio station are approved by the Federal Communications Commission, all of the local company’s Montana radio stations will be in Helena.
“This is where we want to focus,” said Helena resident Kevin Terry, chief executive officer of The Montana Radio Company. “We’re turning all of our focus toward Helena.”
The Helena company plans to retain the staff of the stations it is acquiring and will likely need to move into a bigger facility in the coming months to house them all, Terry said.
“We’re very excited to have the folks over at Cherry Creek come and join us,” he said.
Jonathan Brewster, chief executive officer of Cherry Creek Media, said the company is proud of what its Helena team has achieved.
“While it was a difficult decision to part with the stations, we’re looking forward to strengthening our existing clusters in Great Falls and Butte to better serve their communities,” he said in a press release.
The Montana Radio Company plans to acquire news, talk and sports station KCAP-AM, classic rock station KZMT-FM, and country station KBLL-FM from Cherry Creek Media. The local company plans to retain Helena country station KIMO-FM, hit station KMXM-FM, and variety station KMTX-FM, and it will move Rock 106.5 from KKRK-FM to another frequency.
Cherry Creek Media plans to acquire KMTZ-FM in Butte and FM translators K298BL, K280GG and K260AU in Great Falls from The Montana Radio Company.
In addition, Cherry Creek’s hit music station KBMI-FM of East Helena and adult hits station KHGC-FM of Montana City will be transferred to Your Network of Praise as part of the agreement, Terry said.
