East Helena man makes off with Halloween goodies

David Lee Scharf also was charged with misdemeanor theft for taking the pumpkin and Spiderman buckets.
A deputy was dispatched to a home on the 3100 block of Valley Drive after receiving the report of someone entering a residence and grabbing the candy at about 1:30 a.m., according to documents filed in Justice Court Monday. A complainant said he saw a man wearing a red sweatshirt and blue bandana near the house.
Unable to locate the individual, the deputy called for assistance. A short time later, two officers from the East Helena Police Department, one Montana Highway Patrol officer and three Lewis and Clark County sheriff’s deputies arrived and searched the area, court documents said.
About an hour later, a deputy spotted a man matching the description just east of Lake Helena Drive on Canyon Ferry Road. The man had fresh scrapes and scratches on his hands and his red sweatshirt was torn, court documents noted. The complainants identified Scharf as the man who entered their residence and snatched their candy.
Deputies located six pieces of candy in the right pocket of Scharf’s sweatshirt — two Kit Kat bars, one bag of peanut M&Ms, one fruit snack, one Nestle Crunch bar and one Twizzler licorice stick, court documents stated. The buckets of goodies were found in a ditch near the residence. Court documents said Scharf failed a breath test by blowing more than twice the legal limit of .08.
Scharf is being held in Lewis and Clark County Detention Center in lieu of $5,000 bond.
